Coffee and Stomach Pain: A Better Stomach Friendly Coffee?

Many people prepare a pot of hot coffee as soon as they wake up in the morning - to wake up and get their blood pumping to prepare for the busy day ahead. Unfortunately, a certain number of coffee drinkers ending up paying a price for sipping that cup of java - with nausea and stomach discomfort. For up to twenty percent of the population, coffee and stomach pain go hand in hand. Now, scientists think they know why coffee drinking causes stomach pain -and how they can make an even better stomach friendly coffee.

Coffee and Stomach Pain: A Problem for Some Coffee Drinkers

Theres no shortage of stomach friendly coffees on supermarket shelves, but manufacturers admit that up until now they really havent known what chemical in coffee causes stomach irritation. To make stomach friendly coffees in the past, theyve used steam or solvents to remove any potential irritants from the coffee bean. Stomach friendly coffees that are currently on the market include Folgers Smooth and Java Soft. These options may be better than drinking regular coffee, but they dont completely eliminate the problem. Plus, the way these stomach friendly coffees are made removes some of the healthy antioxidants.

Coffee and Stomach Pain: What Causes It?

Some chemicals in coffee cause the stomach to produce more hydrochloric acid which, of course, leads to symptoms of stomach pain, acid reflux, and nausea. When researchers exposed stomach cells to a variety of different coffee components, they identified three -catechols, caffeine, and N-alkanoly-5-hydroxytryptamides as being the main culprits. At the same time, they found another chemical called N-methylpyridium or NMP that turns off the stomachs acid production and reduces the stomach pain people experience when drinking coffee.

Interestingly, NMP is not found in the raw coffee bean and is produced only when the coffee bean is roasted. The longer its roasted, the more acid-blocking NMP is produced. This means that dark roasted coffee and espresso is easier on the stomach than lighter roasted varieties.

A Better Stomach Friendly Coffee?

This finding should allow manufacturers to put out an even better stomach friendly coffee. Until then, people who experience stomach upset when drinking coffee still have options. They can choose darker roasted decaffeinated coffees and espresso which should cause less stomach irritation. Even better? Cut back on coffee until these newer, more stomach friendly coffees hit the market.

Eating Candy May Not Be so Unhealthy After All

Eating candy gets a bad rap. Sweets are blamed for everything from causing tooth decay, obesity and hyperactivity in kids. But theres good news for candy lovers. According to a new study published in the journal Nutrition Research, eating candy in moderation may not be so unhealthy after all.

Eating Candy May Not Be So Bad After All

This study looked at the candy-eating habits of more than 15,000 adults. When they did, they made some interesting observations. Adults who munched on candy had no greater risk of weight gain or obesity than adults who didnt. Even more surprising was the fact that candy eaters had lower levels of a marker for heart disease called c-reactive protein - and a lower risk of hypertension and metabolic syndrome, a health problem linked with type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Researchers didnt conclude from this study that eating candy is necessarily healthy, especially when its a substitute for more healthy dietary choices - but they believe that eating candy in moderation isnt necessarily a bad thing if you balance it with an otherwise healthy diet and regular exercise. Some candy eaters compensate for their candy indulgences by making healthy food choices at mealtime.

Chocolate is Healthy: Its the Better Way to Eat Candy

You probably already know that dark chocolate contains healthy compounds called flavanols that are good for the heart and help to improve mood by boosting levels of feel-good hormones called endorphins. Who doesnt get a little mood-lift after eating a piece of chocolate?

Eating plain dark chocolate with a high cacao content is one of the healthiest candy choices, but for even more heart-healthy benefits, munch on dark chocolate almonds instead. Almonds are a good source of vitamin E and monounsaturated fats that are heart-healthy. Almonds are also rich in magnesium, which helps to stabilize blood pressure.

Eating Candy and Healthy Chocolate: The Bottom Line?

A little candy in moderation or as a splurge after eating a healthy diet may not be so bad after all - but choose your candy wisely. Instead of munching on high-sugar candies with hydrogenated oils, choose sugar-free dark chocolate almonds for a heart-healthy treat, but dont eat too many. Theyre not low in calories.

The Wonderful Health Benefits of Pine Nuts

When you think of a nut, its quite likely that a pine nut doesnt come to mind, but may maybe it should. Although technically not a nut - its actually a seed from the pine cone, this underappreciated snack offers considerable health benefits. What are some of the health benefits of pine cones and why should you add them to your diet?

Health benefits of pine nuts: They curb your appetite.

It may surprise you to learn that pine nuts can be a potent appetite suppressor. Why? Theyre a good source of a polyunsaturated fat known as pinolenic acid. When you eat a handful of pine nuts, the pinolenic acid stimulates the secretion of a hormone produced by the intestines known as CCK. CCK sends the signal to your brain that youre full which turns off your appetite. It also helps to slow down the rate at which your stomach empties so you feel full and satisfied longer. Who would have dreamed these tiny seeds from the pinecone could zap your appetite?

Health benefits of pine nuts: Theyre nutritional powerhouses.

A single serving of the lowly pine nut can provide you with up to fourteen grams of protein per serving, depending upon the species. Pine nuts are anywhere from ten to thirty-four percent protein. Theyre also an excellent source of fiber as well as vitamins E, K, and niacin. In terms of minerals, theyre an excellent source of magnesium and potassium which is important for maintaining a healthy heart and blood pressure.

Health benefits of pine nuts: Theyre heart healthy.

Pine nuts are high in monounsaturated fats, the same "heart healthy" fats that make nuts and olive oil so beneficial. These fats have not only been shown to reduce blood cholesterol levels but also help to protect the arteries from damage which can lead to a heart attack. Because of their high content, they can go rancid quickly when you buy them already shelled. Their shelf life can be prolonged by refrigeration.

Health benefits of pine nuts: They offer antioxidant protection.

Pine nuts are also high in antioxidants which help to protect the cells of your body from free radical damage. Pine nut oil can also be bought at some natural food markets to help you deliver even more antioxidant power to your salads.

There are so many ways to add the health benefits of pine nuts to your diet. Sprinkle them on salads or onto vegetables and pasta dishes. They also make up one of the main ingredients in basil pesto. To bring out their rich, buttery flavor even more, lightly toast them. Try experimenting in your own kitchen with these tasty "nutty" seeds. Youll soon wonder how you ever cooked without them.

How to Make Perfume from Flowers

Applying a beautiful smelling fragrance can be a real mood lifter but the synthetic perfumes you buy at the drugstore and department store are not only expensive but also contain a variety of chemicals that are thought to be harmful to health. One way to avoid the chemicals and still enjoy fragrance is to make your own perfume from flowers. If you grow your own flowers, you already have a source for making your own natural perfume. If not, you can buy the flower petals of your choice at your local florist or even ask a neighbor if you can borrow some of their unused petals. Be sure to take them some of the perfume you make to thank them for their kindness. Heres how to make perfume from flowers:

Ingredients needed:

One and one-half cups flower blossoms of your choice

Two cups of distilled water

Aluminum pot

Cheesecloth

Funnel

Glass perfume bottle

Make perfume from flowers: Gather your ingredients

You can use any of a variety of flower petals to make your own perfume. You can be a purist and use the blossoms from a single flower or mix blossoms from several flowers to create your own unique signature fragrance. To make your first perfume, youll need around a cup and a half of flower blossoms. Choose blossoms that havent been sprayed. If you buy them from a florist or gardening center, verify with them that theyre free of chemicals or pesticides.

Make perfume from flowers: Prepare your blossoms

Place your chosen flower blossoms into the aluminum pan along with two cups of distilled water. Turn the heat on high and allow your water to come to a complete boil. Once the water boils, turn down the heat to keep the temperature just below the boiling point. Allow the mixture to simmer for two and a half hours.

Make perfume from flowers: Prepare your perfume

Once the mixture has simmered for the allotted time, turn the heat down and allow your flower water to cool. Place cheesecloth into a funnel and slowly strain the flower water through the cheesecloth several times until all of the pulp is removed. Transfer your freshly made perfume to a pretty glass perfume bottle to enjoy at a later time.

Making perfume from flowers is so easy and inexpensive that youll never go back to the chemical laden perfumes that abound at your local department and drugstores. Keep in mind that homemade perfume without preservatives will have a shorter shelf life. Homemade, all natural perfume in a decorative bottle also makes a thoughtful gift for almost any occasion. Dont forget to keep several bottles of your homemade perfume handy for your own enjoyment.

What Causes a Head Rush?

You may have heard the term "head rush" and wondered what this expression means from a medical standpoint. A head rush is a term used to describe a brief fall in blood pressure that occurs when a person stands up too quickly or changes position suddenly. The symptoms of a head rush may include a momentary sensation of dizziness, dimming of vision, lightheadedness, or in rare cases, actual fainting can occur. As you might expect, this sensation can be frightening to those who experience it.

What Causes a Head Rush?

The symptoms of a head rush arise from the brief, but rapid fall in blood pressure. When in a sitting or squatting position, blood can pool in the feet and ankles. When moving from a sitting to a standing position quickly, the body may not adjust quickly enough to the reduced blood volume and the result can be a brief sensation of lightheadedness and dizziness. Although a head rush can occur in a normal person on occasion, especially in warm weather or immediately after eating, if it happens frequently it can indicate a medical problem.

Factors That Cause a Head Rush

In a healthy person, certain underlying factors increase the risk of developing symptoms of a head rush. Not drinking enough fluids or getting inadequate amounts of electrolytes such as sodium and potassium can cause dehydration which lowers blood volume and can lead to a head rush. This is more common when its hot outside. Drugs such as blood pressure medications, heart medications, diuretics, anti-depressants, and marijuana are another common cause. The symptoms of a head rush are more common in the elderly and those who have been on prolonged bed rest.

Medical Causes

More serious causes of a head rush include decreased blood volume due to anemia, certain types of heart and neurological diseases, diabetes and Addisons disease. If symptoms occur more than occasionally, medical attention may be needed. Most isolated episodes of head rush that occur infrequently are not due to underlying disease.

How to Prevent a Head Rush

The symptoms of a head rush can usually be prevented by getting up slowly from a lying or sitting position, particularly in warm weather and after eating a large meal. Drinking electrolyte rich fluids such as Gatorade in the summer can also be helpful. Eating regular, small meals rather than larger ones helps to prevent the drop in blood pressure that occurs after eating. If medications are a factor, they may need to be adjusted by a doctor.

Taking these steps can help to reduce the chance of experiencing a head rush, but if the symptoms persist, its best to see a doctor.

How to Wear Wedges

Wedge heels are all the rage in shoe wear for spring of 2008. Youll see them paired with full, flowing skirts and dresses, skirts, and even jeans for a fun and fresh warm weather look. Wedges are a popular selection since they have a substantial enough heel to add height but are more comfortable than conventional high heeled shoes. They also offer versatility since they can be worn with everything from warm weather casual to evening elegant, although most styles of wedges are meant for casual wear. If youve never worn this style of shoe, this is the year to give them a try. Here are some tips on wearing wedges:

How to wear wedges: Consider your build

Wedge heels are one of the most flattering shoe styles for women with heavy or thick calves and ankles. The clunky heel of the wedge shoe tends to balance thicker thighs and ankles. If your calves are bigger than youd like, youll want to grab several pairs of this shoe style to wear with skirts and dresses. If you have thinner calves and legs, you can still wear them, but try to avoid excessively chunky styles as they can overwhelm your leg.

How to wear wedges: Wear them with spring dresses and skirts

The full, flowing skirts and dresses youll see everywhere this spring are a natural for wedge heeled shoes .The wedge heel will give you the height you need and provide a nice balance for full, puffy skirts. Wedge heels will coordinate beautifully with gauzy pheasant skirts, tunics, and wrap dresses. Theyre also a perfect choice for a casual, summertime party or get together.

How to wear wedges: Wear them with pants

Wedge heeled shoes will add style to wide legged pants and will give you the extra height you need to prevent the leg shortening effect these pants can sometimes have. These shoes can look boho chic with a pair of faded wide legged jeans for a casual day of shopping. Wide leg pants are all the rage this spring so youll want to have the right shoes to go with them. Use caution when wearing wedges with pants that have narrow legs especially if you have larger feet since they can make you look too foot heavy.

How to wear wedges: Explore the different materials

Wedge heels will be found in an overwhelming array of colors, styles, and materials this year. Youll find these trendy heels in the form of boots, sandals, and pumps in leather, suede, canvas, and even metallics. Look for neutral shades to go with the popular Safari look and bright colors to go with this years focus on brights. Youll even find wedge heeled shoes in graphic print fabrics for casual wear. Consider all of your options before making your selection.

Spring 2008 is definitely the season of the wedge shoe. Dont overlook this fun fashion trend!

How to Write a Press Release to Promote Your Handmade Jewelry Business!

Do you want to generate some buzz for your handmade jewelry business! Heres how to write a good press release:

1. Always write your press release on your official company letterhead which includes your contact information including address, phone number, email address, and web site.

2. The words "For Immediate Release" should be typed at the top of the page in the left hand corner. This should be in all capital letters for additional emphasis.

3. In the upper right hand corner, you should type "Contact" in all caps. Skip a space and then type the contact persons name, address, and phone number. Heres an example:

CONTACT:

John Doe
John Doe Company
1111 Any Street
City, State 11111
#xxx-xxx-xxxx

4. Write your headline in bold type and center it just above the press release body. Make your headlight intriguing as is MUST grab the readers attention.

5. Your dateline will come next. This will include the city where the release was written along with the date.

Example: St. Louis, Missouri - January 1, 2002

6. The next portion should be a strong opening statement that includes the why, when, what, and where of your news release.

7. You should follow this statement with a more detailed description of what makes this item newsworthy. Similarly to constructing a sales letter, you want to think in terms of how your item might benefit the reader. Consider using a bulleted list of benefits that your product and service provides. Make your words compelling Its critical to keep the readers full attention!

8. The last few lines should inform the reader on how to get more information about your product or service. This should be brief and might include the address of your website.

9. Youll now want to include the medias universal code for the end of a press release. To do this, you would center -30- at the bottom of the page.

10. Congratulations, youve just completed your first press release!

A few other tips:

1. A press release should only be one page in length.

2. Since youre promoting your jewelry, its a good idea to send photos with your release. Photos should be 5" x 7".

3. Keep your press release short and simple. A press release is meant to briefly inform the reader of your product or service and how it might benefit them. Its not meant to be an exhaustive summary.

4. Ideally, a press release will be in the 350 - 550 word range. Longer is not better.

Hopefully, this will take some of the fear out of writing a press release. Why not start writing one today?

Exercises You Can Do to Stop a Leaky Bladder

A leaky bladder is a common problem, especially among women. Its more common in women who are obese and those who have carried several pregnancies. As a physician, I have encountered numerous women with this frustrating problem thats caused by pelvic muscles weakened by childbirth or obesity. Most people with a leaky bladder have urine leakage when they laugh, cough or sneeze. These movements put stress on pelvic floor muscles that are already weak. Fortunately, treating stress urinary incontinence or a leaky bladder can be as simple as strengthening the muscles in the floor of the pelvis through exercise. One of the best types of exercise for doing this is Kegel exercises.

What Are Kegel Exercises?

Kegel exercises are exercises used to strengthen the muscles of the pelvis wall that control urine flow. These exercises can be performed anywhere at any time and are effective for strengthening the muscles that support the bladder and pelvic organs. The exercises are simple to do and can be done while sitting, standing or lying down.

The Procedure for Doing Kegel Exercises

To do Kegel exercises, begin by emptying your bladder of urine. While assuming a sitting, standing or lying down position, contract the muscles in your pelvis and anal region as if youre trying to avoid urinating. Hold this position for three to five seconds before releasing. Repeat twelve to fifteen times throughout the day.

You can do these exercises when youre seated at your desk at work, while brushing your teeth, standing in line at the grocery store or doing other tasks. The good news is no one can see you doing them! One way to remember is to set an alarm to go off several times a day to remind yourself to contract your pelvic muscles. By doing these exercises consistently, youll strengthen these muscles over time and reduce the leakage of urine.

How Well Do Kegel Exercise Work for Treating a Leaky Bladder?

The good news is Kegel exercises are effective. A study published in the British Medical Journal in 1999 (BMJ 1999; 318(7182):487-93) compared pelvic floor exercises to two other types of treatment for stress urinary incontinence and leaky bladder. Kegel exercises resulted in greater improvement in leaky bladder than vaginal cones or electrical stimulation, two other treatments for this problem. Thats good news since women with leaky bladder can do these exercises anytime, anywhere.

How Long Does It Take to See Results?

You can expect to see results from Kegel exercise in about three months if youre doing them correctly.

Depressed? Could it Be High Lead Levels?

Are you feeling a bit down lately? If so, you may want to get your lead level checked. According to a study published in Archives of General Psychiatry young adults with high levels of lead in their blood may be prone to depression, anxiety, and even panic attacks.

High Blood Levels of Lead and the Risk of Depression: A Study

To determine this, researchers looked at almost 2,000 young adults under the age of forty. After examining them and determining if they had psychiatric problems such as depression, anxiety, or panic attacks, they collected blood to check for high levels of lead. As it turns out, those adults who had the highest blood levels of lead were 2.3 times more likely to be diagnosed with depression and five times more likely to have panic disorder compared to those who had the lowest levels of lead in their blood.

How Does High Blood Lead Levels Cause Psychiatric Problems?

While the issue of lead poisoning has always focused around its effects on children, high levels of lead can cause problems for adults too - particularly brain health issues. Lead affects communication between brain cells by altering the levels of certain brain neurotransmitters which can increase the risk of depression, anxiety, and panic attacks. If blood levels of lead arent extremely high this may be the only symptoms a young adult experiences. Other symptoms of high blood levels of lead include nausea, decreased energy level, a bad taste in the mouth, irritability, headache, and difficulty focusing.

How Does an Adult Get High Blood Lead Levels?

Lead is commonly found in the environment as well as in the air, soil, and water. The most common way that adults get exposure to high levels of lead is through industrial occupations that manufacture products containing lead. Its not uncommon for workers to bring home lead particles on their clothing and expose other members of the household. Lead can also be found in soil and water that runs over lead pipes especially in areas near industrial sites. Food can be contaminated with lead especially if its cooked in ceramic bowls painted with lead glazes. Lead based paints and fumes from batteries are another source. High blood levels of lead can come from ingestion, inhalation, and even through skin contact.

Psychiatric Problems and High Levels of Lead: The Bottom Line?

If youre experiencing anxiety or depression, it may be helpful to check a lead level to se if it could be contributing to your symptoms. This can be checked with a simple blood test at your doctors office.

What Should You Do About Underarm Bumps?

If youve ever experienced underarm bumps or an underarm rash, youre not alone. This irritating symptom occurs quite frequently, particularly in females since they usually use a razor to remove underarm hair. These underarm bumps can be itchy and quite irritating. What causes this symptom and what can you do about it?

One of the most common causes of underarm bumps or a rash is folliculitis which is an infection or irritation of the hair follicles. Although folliculitis can occur anywhere theres a hair follicle, its particularly common in moist areas that are exposed to irritation from repeated shaving.

Underarm folliculitis usually presents as underarm bumps or a rash which is red, itchy, and tender, in some cases. The bumps tend to cluster around hair follicles and in more severe cases can cause formation of pus filled blisters with significant tenderness.

In many cases, folliculitis along with the underarm bumps will clear up on its own in less than a week if certain precautions are taken. If the rash fails to clear or theres extreme pain or formation of blisters with pus, youll need to see your doctor for an antibiotic or antifungal agent.

What can you do at home to prevent and treat underarm bumps due to folliculitis? One of the primary causes of folliculitis in the underarm area is irritation due to shaving. This can occur when the blade of your razor becomes dull which causes excessive traction against the skin resulting in irritation. Another cause can be bacterial growth on the surface of the razor blade which can occur when a razor is stored in a moist environment that breeds bacteria. To avoid both of these factors, store your razor in a dry place and dont use it more than three times before replacing it with a clean blade. When shaving under the arms, apply a shaving cream and always shave in the direction of hair growth, not against it. It also helps to wear clothing that allows free air flow to the underarm area to reduce moisture build up.

Sometimes underarm bumps can be caused by a reaction to an antiperspirant. If youve recently changed antiperspirant brands, try discontinuing it for a week and keep the underarm area clean and dry with frequent cleansing using a mild, hypoallergenic soap. If the symptoms fail to resolve, youll want to see your doctor for possible antibiotic or antifungal treatment. Always see your doctor if you experience any knots or areas of swelling under your arms since these can be swollen lymph nodes which can indicate a more serious condition.

Underarm bumps can be a nuisance but are usually easily prevented and treated by making changes to your shaving routine. Keep those underarms clean and dry with good air flow and you can further reduce the incidence of underarm rashes.

What to Do After a Bad Haircut

You only wanted a trim and a bit of layering but the hairstylist at that brand new salon took off five inches and gave you a haircut so horrible it almost reduced you to tears. A bad haircut happens to everyone at one time or another and although it feels like a critical event at the time, hair grows and even a bad haircut will correct itself over time. But it can be a challenge to deal with this problem at the time it happens. Here are some ideas on what to do when a bad haircut has you down:

After a bad haircut: Assess the damage

Is you new haircut truly as bad as you think or is it just a radical departure from the norm that may require some adjustment on your part? Try washing your hair to remove the styling products and see what you have to work with. Is there a way you could style it differently or change the part to give it a better look? Experiment a bit with your blow dryer and other hair appliances. You may find with a little creativity you can turn your new haircut into a winner.

After a bad haircut: Get an objective assessment.

Call a friend that you trust to be brutally honest and ask her to evaluate your new haircut. She may see it in a more objective light than you and may be able to make some suggestions on a more flattering way to style your cut.

After a bad haircut: Schedule a consultation with the hair salon.

It may be you just need a few lessons on how to style your new haircut. Schedule an appointment with the salon who cut your hair and let them know youre having problems with your new cut A few lessons in how to blow dry and style your new haircut may be all you need to appreciate your new look.

After a bad haircut: Head for the hair magazines.

Buy some copies of hair magazines on the market that show haircuts similar to yours. Study the photos and learn from the way these cuts were styled and the different possible variations.. If they suggest particular styling products, consider giving them a try. Experiment with your new haircut based on what you learn from these magazines and learn what works and what doesnt.

After a bad haircut: Look at the bright side.

A new haircut, even if its not the most flattering, gives you a chance to sport an entirely new look. Sometimes reinventing yourself can be a positive. Experiment with some new cosmetic and fashion ideas that you might not have tried with your "safe" haircut. Be more outlandish and daring. Try altering your hair color or adding highlights that you might not have done before. This is your opportunity to step out of your fashion safety zone.

Keep in mind that even the worst haircut isnt permanent. Learn from the experience so your next haircut can be just want you want.

Can the Worlds First Anti-Aging Perfume Make You Smell Young?

There are creams and lotions in every price range claiming to make you look younger and more youthful and Americans are whipping open their wallets and pocketbooks to buy in record numbers. As it turns out, how you smell may be just as important to youthfulness as how you look, at least according to the makers of the worlds first perfume to mask aging. Yes, theres now a perfume that claims to make you smell young.

This new perfume that reportedly can make you smell young is called, appropriately enough, Ageless Fantasy. This isnt a scent dreamed up to make a few quick dollars; its actually backed by research conducted by scientists at Rutgers University. According to scientific research, as women age they secrete higher levels of palmitoleic acid, a fatty acid with an unpleasant odor. Excretion of this fatty acid continues to rise over time as the aging process continues. When this fatty acid is excreted, its metabolized by skin bacteria producing a compound known as nonenal that has a musty odor that some people find offensive. The idea behind this anti-aging perfume is to counteract the odor of aging without simply masking it as regular perfumes do.

Ageless Fantasy isnt the only personal care product designed to make you smell young. Shiseido Co, a large cosmetic producer in Japan, has also developed a lotion and spray created to offset the odor associated with aging. The sales of this product were high as soon as the product hit store shelves in Japan. This should come as no surprise with there being so much interest among middle aged and older people in recapturing their youth.

Will Ageless Fantasy really make you smell young? This perfume is a blend of a variety of tropical fruit derivatives such as mango, pineapple, pomegranate, and other natural scents. According to the claims of the company, it will make you smell eight years younger. As it turns out, the smell of youth isnt cheap. A three ounce bottle of Ageless Fantasy costs $120.00.

Why not just use a regular perfume? According to the manufacturers of the worlds only perfume to make you smell young, conventional perfumes mask the odor of age, while Ageless Fantasty counteracts the odor while giving the wearer a pleasant, youthful smell. A variety of testimonials on their website attest to the effectiveness of their product.

If youre smelling a little "musty" these days and want to smell young again, you may want to try this unique product. At $120.00 for three ounces, use it sparingly.

Is Sleep Restriction Effective for Insomnia Treatment?

Do you spend your nights tossing and turning in a fevered effort to get some sleep? Insomnia isnt a pleasant experience and can leave you feeling emotionally and physically drained. Although a variety of approaches can be taken to bring about healthier sleep patterns, not all of them work. It can take a great deal of time and experimentation to come up with a solution for this frustrating problem. One approach that has shown some benefit in studies is the use of sleep restriction, a process where you limit sleep in order to establish new sleep behaviors.

What is sleep restriction therapy and how does it help insomnia?

Sleep restriction therapy teaches you to limit sleep and the time spent in bed until you can retrain your body to sleep more efficiently. Is this approach effective for insomnia? A study published in the Journal of Gerontology compared the use of sleep restriction therapy and the use of relaxation therapy to see which was more effective for promoting long-term healthier sleep patterns. The results? The people who were in the sleep restriction group who were asked to limit sleep experienced greater improvement than those undergoing relaxation therapy for insomnia.

How is sleep restriction therapy carried out?

Basically, you limit sleep to a set number of hours, starting at around five hours per night. You would set your alarm for the same time each morning after allowing yourself five hours of sleep for the night. If youre unable to sleep once you get into bed, you would get out of bed and do another activity until you feel capable of sleeping again. The same would apply if you woke up in the middle of the night. Regardless of how much sleep youve had you would get out of bed when the alarm goes off five hours later.

How long do you limit sleep with this technique?

Once youre able to sleep the full five hours, you would add additional time at fifteen minute intervals weekly as long as you continue to sleep throughout the night until youre getting a full nights sleep. By doing this you would reduce inefficient sleep behaviors such as tossing and turning and train your body to adapt to a set sleep schedule. To increase the chance for success, no naps would be allowed during the day. The whole purpose is to teach yourself to sleep again and eliminate wasted time spent in bed.

Is this really effective for insomnia?

This method does appear to be effective for insomnia, although it may not work for everyone. Before choosing to limit sleep on your own, talk to your doctor about using this technique. Youll likely experience mild symptoms of sleep deprivation at first so youll need to be in good health otherwise. This effective technique for treating insomnia may be just what the doctor ordered.

Frailty in Men and Low Levels of Testosterone

Most people believe that frailty in elderly people is a natural part of the aging process. This isnt necessarily so. Sometimes theres an underlying hormone, vitamin, or nutrient deficiency that leads to frailty in the elderly. Now, a new study shows that frailty in elderly men is associated with a low level of testosterone.

Low Levels of Testosterone and Frailty in the Elderly

Researchers used a special scale to assess the degree of frailty in a group of men over the age of seventy. They also measured their testosterone levels. After establishing their baseline levels of testosterone and degree of frailty, they retested them again more than four years later. The results? Men with low levels of testosterone were more likely to become frail as they grew older.

What are the Dangers of Frailty in Elderly Men?

Frailty in elderly men increases the risk of a variety of problems. Frailty in the elderly may can manifest as muscle weakness, loss of muscle mass, weight loss, decreased endurance, reduced walking speed, and an increased risk of falls and fractures. Elderly men who are frail are more likely to need assistance carrying out their daily activities and have a higher risk of institutionalization. The problem may be worsened if an elderly person also has other medical problems. Low levels of testosterone also increase the risk of osteoporosis - another risk factor for falls and fractures.

Can Testosterone Supplementation Reduce Frailty in Elderly Men?

More studies are needed to see whether testosterone supplements can prevent or improve frailty in older men. One study showed that elderly men with borderline low levels of testosterone who were supplemented with testosterone for six months experienced an increase in muscle strength and mass - although this didnt translate into functional improvements. On the other hand, researchers pointed out that testosterone levels may need to be even higher to improve functional limitations.

Frailty in Elderly Men and Testosterone

The verdict is still out as to whether boosting testosterone levels in men who are deficient prevents frailty. What is known is that low levels of testosterone increases the risk of becoming frail with age and that replacing testosterone improves muscle strength and mass - but not necessarily functional abilities. It may be a good idea for men over the age of seventy to have a testosterone level checked and talk to a doctor about whether replacement therapy is a good option for them.

How to Treat a Red, Ruddy Skin Color

Are you embarrassed by a red, ruddy complexion? One of the most common causes of a ruddy skin color is rosacea, a chronic skin condition that results in a ruddy skin color along with visible facial swelling and sometimes visible blood vessels and pimples. If you suspect you may be suffering from this condition, visit your dermatologist so you can receive appropriate medical treatment to reduce the redness. Here are some additional ways to reduce skin redness.

Treat red, ruddy skin: Dont use irritating chemicals on your face

Although more people are using retinoic acids, alpha hydroxy acids, and topical vitamin C to help rejuvenate aging skin, these may be irritating to your skin which can increase the redness. Choose a mild cleanser and a non-irritating, fragrance-free moisturizer. Research carefully before you buy a skin product and only use ones that have natural ingredients whenever possible. Avoid aggressively cleansing and exfoliating which can cause skin irritation, making the problem worse.

Treat red, ruddy skin: Watch what you eat.

Surprisingly, a ruddy complexion can be aggravated by eating certain foods. Some spicy foods cause release of histamine, a protein that dilates blood vessels and can contribute to a ruddy skin color. Its also important to stay away from wine and alcoholic beverages which have the same effect.

Treat red, ruddy skin: Avoid the sun

If you have a ruddy skin color, its important to avoid exposure to the sun. The best way to do this is to get a sun block that blocks both UVA and UVB rays and wear it consistently.

Treat red, ruddy skin: Use cold compresses

A quick way to reduce facial redness is to hold a bag of cold, frozen vegetables against your face. This will cause the blood vessels to constrict and temporarily reduce the redness.

Treat red, ruddy skin: Use color corrective make-up

Another way to camouflage a ruddy skin color is to use a special color corrective make-up with a green base. These can be found at some cosmetic counters and even some drugstores. These cosmetics are designed specifically to tone down rosy skin and can be quite effective when used properly.

Treat red, ruddy skin: A more definitive option

In some cases, particularly if you have rosacea, laser light therapy can treat a ruddy skin color. The energy from the laser is used to seal off superficial blood vessels that are contributing to the redness. Although your skin will look redder immediately after the procedure, the redness fades as your skin heals and you may experience significant improvement in your skin color and texture.

As you can see, there are simple ways to reduce skin redness if you suffer from a ruddy skin color. Why not give these ideas a try?

A New Lymphoma Treatment for Dogs?

There could be a new option for treating lymphoma in dogs on the horizon. Lymphoma is a cancer involving the lymph glands and the tissues that make up the immune system. Its one of the most common types of cancers veterinarians see in dogs - accounting for up to one in five canine cancers. Lymphoma is more frequently diagnosed in certain dog breeds, such as Golden retrievers and Rottweillers, but it can affect any breed of dog.

Conventional Lymphoma Treatment for Dogs

Lymphoma in dogs often responds to chemotherapy medications, similar to ones used in humans. With these medications, some dogs diagnosed with lymph cancer, survive a year, or even longer. If a dog with lymphoma is left untreated, the survival time is usually only four to six weeks. Because pets are such an important part of peoples lives, more dog owners are choosing to treat cancerx such as lymphoma in dogs.

A New Way to Treat Lymphoma in Dogs?

Researchers at the University of Illinois are testing a new lymphoma treatment for dogs. This new drug acts on a specific enzyme called procaspase-3 that causes cancer cells to die. Many cancers in humans and animals contain high levels of procaspase-3, which means this drug could be a target for cancers in both animals and humans.

While testing this new compound, called PAC-1, in dogs, researchers discovered it made their brain cells more excitable by binding to zinc. To offset this undesirable effect, they modified PAC-1 so that this is no longer a problem. This new lymphoma treatment for seems to have few risks or side effects.

Unfortunately, this treatment for dog lymphoma needs further testing and may not be approved by the FDA for several years. In the meantime, chemotherapy, using already approved cancer drugs, remains the standard treatment approach. Not all dogs respond to chemotherapy for canine lymphoma - especially if the diagnosis is made too late.

The Signs of Lymphoma in dogs

Any dog owner who feels swollen nodules in a dogs neck, chest, or behind the knees should talk to their veterinarian immediately. Other symptoms of canine lymphoma are weight loss, lack of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, and difficulty breathing. Dog lymphoma is more common in older dogs, but it can occur at any age.

Lymphoma Treatment for Dogs: The Bottom Line

This new treatment for canine lymphoma offers hope for dogs who fail to respond to conventional chemotherapy - and it may have fewer side effects. Researchers are hoping this new medication could eventually treat lymphoma in humans too. Stay tuned for more research on this up-and-coming lymphoma treatment for dogs.

Can Olive Oil Help to Prevent Obesity?

Obesity is a growing problem in this country and theres no sign this trend will be reversing anytime soon. Much of the problem can be blamed on the typically high fat, high calorie diet that many Americans consume. In contrast, countries such as Greece that enjoy a Mediterranean diet rich in vegetables, whole grains, and nuts have a much lower rate of obesity and heart disease. One key component thats thought to play a role in the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet is olive oil. Now, a new study shows that an extract from extra-virgin olive oil could help to prevent obesity.

Can Olive Oil Help to Prevent Obesity? : A Study

In this study, published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, researchers using fat cells obtained from mice, showed that hydroxytyrosol, an antioxidant found in olive oil, stimulated the function of a key cellular component, the mitochondria. The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell and is responsible for most of the production of energy that drives the cells chemical reactions. The addition of hydroxytyrosol to fat cells makes the mitochondria work even harder to produce energy and could play a key role in helping to prevent obesity as well as lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Its this component that may account for some of the health benefits of olive oil.

Other Benefits of Olive Oil for Obesity

This isnt the only component of olive oil that could help to prevent obesity. Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, "good" fats that promote heart health by lowering LDL cholesterol levels. One study showed that a diet rich in monounsaturated fats found in olive oil reduced central obesity, the accumulation of fat in the abdominal region, and enhanced insulin sensitivity; both positive changes for anyone struggling with a weight issue. Replacing other fats, particularly saturated ones, with the heart-healthy monounsaturated fats found in olive oil may be an important factor in helping to prevent obesity in those who are susceptible.

Another study showed that oleic acid, a fatty acid found in olive oil, could help to prevent obesity another way. Oleic acid appears to be converted into a protein that signals to the brain that enough food has been eaten so that fewer calories are consumed. It essentially shuts off hunger signals. Many people could use this kind of help!

One Precaution

Olive oil is high in calories and shouldnt be used in abundance. If future research confirms that olive oil can help to prevent obesity, an olive oil extract could be marketed that would give the benefits without all the calories.

Is Tuna Fish Healthy?

If you could peek into the lunchboxes of many school children and some grown-ups as well, theres a good chance youd find a freshly made tuna fish sandwich. Canned tuna fish provides a quick and inexpensive way to create a filling lunch thats rich in flavor, but light on the budget. What about nutrition? Is tuna fish healthy?

Is Tuna Fish Healthy?: The Good

Tuna fish has some positives from a nutritional standpoint. Its a good source of omega-3 fatty acids for better heart health. Tuna is also an excellent source of protein with a three ounce serving boasting twenty-two protein grams and only one-hundred calories. From a vitamin and mineral standpoint, its an excellent source of the B vitamins and selenium. With almost no saturated fat, its clean eating at its best. No wonder body builders buy it by the case!

Is Tuna Fish Healthy? The Bad

Unfortunately, all isnt rosy in the world of tuna. Because tuna is a large fish thats high in the food chain, its often a source of mercury - a particular problem for children who are more sensitive to mercury toxicity. There have been documented cases of mercury poisoning in children who eat tuna fish sandwiches on a regular basis. Mercury levels are usually higher in albacore tuna than in canned light tuna " so albacore should be avoided. The FDA suggests that its safe for an adult to eat up to twelve ounces of canned light tuna per week, but only six ounces of albacore.

Canned tuna fish can also be high in salt with a three ounce serving having as much as 300 grams of sodium. Salt free canned tuna is available in some stores; and the sodium content can be lowered by rinsing canned tuna in water before serving. Canned tuna fish also comes packed in oil which is higher in calories and fat, so stick to water packed versions.

Is Tuna Fish Healthy?: Other Warnings

Canned tuna fish does have health benefits when you exclude the mercury issue, but it loses some of its healthy glow when its prepared with a big glob of mayonnaise. Mayonnaise is high in calories and fat and it doesnt take much to throw a tuna fish sandwich into calorie overload. Dont be fooled when you order a tuna fish sandwich at a restaurant. The harsh reality is the tuna fish sandwich at Panera Bread has 720 calories and is probably just as diet unfriendly at other restaurants and sandwich shops. Make your own at home with low fat mayonnaise instead.

Is Tuna Fish Healthy? The Bottom Line?

If you make tuna fish salad yourself use low fat mayonnaise and eat it only twice a week. Dont children tuna more than once a week and steer clear of albacore.

A Natural Way to Lower Prostate Cancer Risk?

Are you getting enough omega-3s in your diet? While its important for everyone to get the health benefits omega-3 fatty acids, it may be particularly critical if youre a male. According to a new study, omega-3s may help to reduce prostate cancer risk, a cancer that affects up to one in six men. The chances of a man developing prostate cancer over the course of his lifetime are higher than the chances of a woman contracting breast cancer. Obviously with a disease this common, its important to look for ways to lower prostate cancer risk and omega-3s could offer some additional protection against this all too common cancer.

In this study, which was published in Clinical Cancer Research, the researchers found that men who had the highest intakes of omega-3s in their diet had a sixty-three percent lower prostate cancer risk than those who consumed the least omega-3s. This is good news if youre a fish lover since fatty fish are one of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids around.

How might omega-3s reduce prostate cancer risk? Researchers believe that omega-3s helps to reduce prostate inflammation which, over time, can lead to formation of a prostate cancer. It appears to do this by altering the activity of an enzyme known as Cox-2 which is involved in the inflammatory process that can eventually lead to cancer. How much omega-3 was needed to see this effect? This study showed a benefit when men increased their intake of omega-3s by only a half gram per day. Animal studies have also showed a lower prostate cancer risk when omega-3s were added to their diet.

While fatty fish are one of the best sources of omega-3s, if you dont enjoy the taste of sea creatures, you still have options. If you enjoy the crunchy taste of nuts, walnuts are an excellent source of omega-3s which may lower prostate cancer risk. Other good sources are ground flaxseed, canola oil, and foods that have been fortified with omega-3 such as eggs and milk.

Because omega-3s arent found in a great variety of foods, some people choose to use supplements. This can be a good option if you buy them from a reputable company who tests for the presence of contaminants such as mercury sometimes found in the bodies of fatty fish. Generally, omega-3 supplements are not significant sources of mercury or other contaminants since processing removes them. You can also buy vegetarian omega-3 supplements that arent derived from fish.

If youre a male, you may want to consider adding more omega-3s to your diet. Not only could it lower prostate cancer risk, but it may have other beneficial properties such as reducing the risk of heart disease. If you have a history of a bleeding disorder or take a blood thinner, talk to your doctor before taking omega-3 supplements.

A New Danger of High Fructose Corn Syrup?

The dangers of high fructose corn syrup have recently received a lot of publicity. This sweet syrup found in products ranging from soft drinks to packaged snack products, has come under scrutiny for its association with obesity and heart disease. Now, new research points out another potential danger of high fructose corn syrup - it forms toxic substances when exposed to heat.

The Dangers of High Fructose Corn Syrup: Where Does It Come From?

High fructose corn syrup is made through a multi-step process that involves converting corn starch to glucose and then to fructose to form a clear, sweet syrup. This involves a number of labor intensive steps. Surprisingly, despite the lengthy process used to make high fructose corn syrup, its still cheaper than sugar - which is why high fructose corn syrup is so commonly found in packaged foods. Its also controversial because its believed to be made from genetically modified corn.

Another Danger of High Fructose Corn Syrup?

According to new research published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Science, when this sweetener is heated it produces a toxin called hydroxymethylfurfural or HMF. This chemical is thought to damage DNA, the genetic material found in cells. Its also a problem for people who raise bees since high fructose corn syrup is used to increase honey production in honey bees and can cause illness in the bees who are exposed to it.

Is It a Problem for Humans?

Although this new danger of high fructose corn syrup has yet to be thoroughly studied, it could pose a risk for people who use sauces and condiments sweetened with high fructose corn syrup that are heated on the stove. Many ketchups, barbeque sauces, glazes, and marinades contain this sweetener and are often exposed to heat which could convert the high fructose corn syrup to HMF. It appears that toxicity is greatest when high fructose corn syrup is heated above 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

The results of this study are still preliminary and some experts say that HMF isnt harmful to humans; but why take the chance? High fructose corn syrup is not a healthy sweetener to begin with and this additional risk further highlights its potential dangers.

The Dangers of High Fructose Corn Syrup: The Bottom Line?

Check labels carefully and avoid products containing high fructose corn syrup as much as possible. If you do use them, dont use them on food that will be exposed to heat. All in all, high fructose corn syrup shouldnt be part of a healthy diet.

How to Enhance Blonde Hair Naturally

Shiny, healthy blonde hair that catches the light can be your most stunning fashion accessory. Unfortunately, natural blonde hair tends to become dull and lackluster over a long winter with no sun exposure to lighten the color. Theres no need to go out and spend money on expensive color enhancing shampoos, conditioners, and rinses when you can make your own blonde hair shampoo and rinses to enhance blonde hair color. Heres how:

Enhance blonde hair: Make your own color enhancing shampoo

Color enhancing shampoos purchased at your salon or local drugstore tend to be expensive and may contain harsh chemicals that can damage your hair and your health. The simplest solution is to make your own using all-natural ingredients. Start by purchasing a bottle of castile soap from your local supermarket or natural food store. This will serve as the base for your blonde hair shampoo. To make an easy color enhancing shampoo for blond hair, pour a half cup of castile soap into a glass container. Add five tablespoons of fresh lemon juice and a half cup of water. Mix thoroughly and place the ingredients into a microwave safe container. Microwave on high for a minute and a half. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature. Transfer to storage bottles to save until you next shampoo your hair. When you shampoo, allow the mixture to remain on your hair for five minutes before rinsing with cool water.

To make another natural shampoo to enhance blonde hair, add five tablespoons of dried Chamomile flowers to a pint of water. Bring the water to a boil for forty minutes. Allow the water to cool to room temperature and then strain with a tea strainer to remove the dried flowers. Add the liquid to castile soap and store. The chamomile will help to brighten and add shine to your blonde hair.

Enhance blonde hair: Make a blonde hair rinse

Making a rinse to enhance blonde hair can be as simple as adding the juice of two lemons to two cups of warm water. The lemon juice has a gentle bleaching action that will subtly lighten and add shine to your hair. You can also prepare chamomile tea to use as a rinse for blonde hair. Rinses should be worked thoroughly through the hair and allowed to stay on for fifteen minutes before rinsing. Always use a cool water rinse to further enhance highlights and add shine.
By using a shampoo and rinse to enhance blonde hair, you should see a subtle lightening and brightening of your blonde hair color which may become more pronounced with repeated use. Plus, the ingredients are gentle and wont damage your hair and are inexpensive enough not to damage your pocketbook.

Four Common Causes of Dry Mouth and Nose

Do you suffer from a constant dry mouth and nose? This is common complaint, particularly during the winter months when the air is dry, but it can also be a sign of a more serious condition - like an autoimmune disease. Find out what causes a dry mouth and nose.

Most Common Causes of Dry Mouth and Nose: Is It the Humidity?

If you have a dry mouth and nose, low humidity in the air could be the problem. If you live in a dry environment, the lack of humidity can dry out your mucous membranes and cause a dry mouth and nose. This is not only uncomfortable, but it increases the chances of catching cold or flu virus. Most experts recommend an indoor humidity of between 35% and 45%. If have a constant dry nose and mouth, invest in a humidifier to keep your mucous membranes moist.

Medications

Medications are a common cause of dry mouth and nose and a wide variety of medications can cause this symptom from antihistamines to anti-depressants. The drugs that cause this symptom are too numerous to list, so if you have a dry nose and mouth talk to your doctor. In some cases, another medication can be substituted for one thats causing dryness. Dont forget that the nicotine in cigarettes can also cause mouth dryness.

Dehydration

Not drinking enough fluid can dry out your mouth and mucous membranes. Try increasing your fluid intake if you have a dry mouth and nose. A more serious cause of a dry nose and mouth is poorly controlled diabetes. High blood sugar levels and ketones cause loss of fluid, which can lead to severe dehydration. This initially manifests as a dry mouth.

More Serious Causes of Dry Mouth and Nose

A dry mouth and nose may be the first sign of an autoimmune disease, most commonly Sjogrens syndrome. This disease attacks glands that secrete mucous - leading to severe mouth and nose dryness as well as dry eyes. Another autoimmune disease called sarcoidosis can also cause a chronic dry mouth. People who have the HIV virus also commonly complain of mouth dryness. There are blood tests that can help with the diagnosis of these conditions.

The Bottom Line?

Dry mouth and nose are common problems, and they may be due to dehydration or living in a low humidity environment. On the other hand, they can also be a sign of a more serious problem such as an autoimmune disease. If you have this symptom and it doesnt improve by increasing the humidity of your home and drinking more water, see your doctor.

Is Dissolvable Tobacco Safer Than Smoking Cigarettes?

A new type of "tobacco" has entered the market. Manufacturers are testing dissolvable tobacco products in several markets in the Midwest in hopes of drawing nicotine-hungry buyers away from cigarettes, so smokers can get their nicotine fix from small pieces of candy shaped like tic tacs. But are these products any safer than puffing on a cigarette?

Dissolvable Tobacco Products: Whats in Them?

Dissolvable tobacco products are sold in packaging that looks like a container of breath mints. Users place the candy-shaped tobacco product between the cheek and the gum or directly - and allow it to dissolve and release its nicotine. You can also buy dissolvable tobacco as a strip that fits under your tongue - and in the form of a toothpick. The idea the manufacturers of these products are promoting is that these "candies" are a safer substitute for cigarettes.

Each dissolvable tobacco "candy" is made of tobacco that has been milled into a fine powder and held together by binders. Because theyre made from milled tobacco, they contain nicotine, but they contain less than what youd get from smoking a cigarette.

Dissolvable tobacco hasnt been extensively researched, but theres concern that these products may increase the risk of disease of the mouth, tooth decay, gum disease and, possibly cancer. Dissolvable tobacco products also contain coumarin, an ingredient thats toxic to the liver and kidneys.

Perhaps the biggest concern is that dissolvable tobacco products will get into the hands of children - which they already have. According to a study published in the journal Pediatrics and discussed on Medscape.com, smoke-free tobacco products are the second most common cause of tobacco poisoning in children. They point out that dissolvable tobacco products contain an un-ionized form of nicotine, which makes it more rapidly absorbed - and potentially more toxic.

Children find the packaging to be appealing since it resembles candy. Eating these dissolvable tobacco "candies" boosts the desire for more nicotine - and an addiction is born. Manufacturers are subtly altering their packaging to make it more appealing to the younger crowd.

Dissolvable Tobacco: The Bottom Line?

Dissolvable tobacco may increase the risk of disease of the mouth and gums - and it could lead to nicotine poisoning in children who get their hands on it. Its another attempt for the tobacco companies to keep their faltering foothold on the market.

Jewelry Designers! What Are You Customers Not Telling You that Could Kill Your Jewelry Business?

With there being so much competition in the world of handmade jewelry design, its important that you keep your customer satisfied. If a customer is unhappy, rather than tell you whats wrong, shell most likely respond by not purchasing from you again. Why not make it easy for your customers to let you know when youre doing something thats not pleasing to them? Most customers would be too embarrassed to approach you directly with a complaint. (although thats not always true. I can think of a few VERY outspoken customers from the past). Its important to make it as easy for them as possible to give you feedback.

Give this idea a try! Before you go to your next jewelry show, buy or construct a "suggestion box" out of wood or other sturdy, attractive material. Beside the suggestion box, include a pen and pad to make it easy for customers to jot down their comments as theyre leaving your booth.

As you check out each customer, ask them if they would be so kind as to jot down a few thoughts on how you can serve them better and drop them in the suggestion box. To be a bit original, you could even construct two different boxes. One would be labeled "complaints" and the other labeled "praise". Have a big smiley face on the praise box and a scowling frowning face on the complaint box. Include a sign that says "Feed me your praise and your complaints. Im here to help."

Most people love to give their opinion and will be happy to help out with a comment or two. These comments can be invaluable in helping you to improve your business especially if you see a pattern of similar comments or complaints. Sometimes the only way you become aware of a problem or a potential opportunity is through written suggestions and feedback.

In my own jewelry business, I set up a comment box and was surprised to find dozens of requests for clip earrings. No one had ever voiced their need their clip earrings directly to me so I had never attempted to design any for my market. The repeated requests in my suggestion box inspired me to test run a few clip earring designs. Well, needless to say, they became one of my best sellers. Had I not solicited comments and feedback, I would never have known and Id be quite a few dollars poorer.

Find out what adding a comment or suggestion box can do for your own jewelry business! Are you unknowingly not providing good customer service? Are you providing exactly what your jewelry market wants? Are there items you should be carrying, but arent? Sometimes the only way to find out is to ask the source, your customer. Best of luck with your jewelry business and keep on marketing jewelry!

Teenage Alcohol Use Could Raise Breast Cancer Risk

Drinking alcohol could raise breast cancer risk in teenagers by increasing their risk of developing benign breast disease according to a new study carried out at Washington University School of Medicine. Teenage alcohol use of any type increases a teens odds of developing benign breast changes - a condition which can lead to breast biopsies and a higher risk of breast cancer in some cases. Disturbing news for teenage girls who are experimenting with alcohol.

Teen Use of Alcohol and Breast Disease

In this study, researchers looked at the alcohol drinking habits of over 9,000 girls between the ages of nine and fifteen. They found that girls who drank alcohol were at a higher risk of developing benign breast disease. Although benign breast disease is non-cancerous, some types raise the risk of breast cancer, and may require biopsy - leading to considerable anxiety. In this study, girls who drank most days of the week increased their risk of benign breast disease by over five times and the risk was elevated even for teens who drank smaller amounts of alcohol and teens who only binge drank.

Teenage Use of Alcohol: Harmful to the Breasts in More Ways than One

Not only is teenage alcohol use unhealthy for breast tissue short-term, but the risk can carry over into adulthood. Studies show that women who drink even one or two alcoholic drinks a day as adults have an increased risk of breast cancer - although this risk can be offset by supplementing with folic acid. When it comes to the risk of benign breast disease and breast cancer, theres no safe time for females to drink alcohol.

Teenage Alcohol Use: How Does Drinking Alcohol Raise Breast Cancer Risk and the Risk of Benign Breast Disease?

This is most likely due to the effect alcohol has on estrogen levels. According to studies, alcoholic beverages alter the way estrogen is metabolized and broken down by the liver - leads to higher estrogen levels. Estrogen is a hormone that promotes the growth of the most common types of breast cancer. Although estrogen doesnt directly cause breast cancer, if a cancer-causing mutation occurs in a breast cell, estrogen can fuel its development.

Teenage Use of Alcohol and Benign Breast Disease: The Bottom Line?

This is one more good reason to discourage teenage alcohol use. Studies are showing that a womans risk of breast cancer later in life is affected by what shes exposed to as a teenager and may go as far back as exposures in the womb. Tell teenage girls to say "no" to alcohol.

Curcumin for Weight Loss

Although theres no substitute for diet and exercise when it comes to weight loss, theres growing evidence that certain herbs and spices may slightly increase the rate at which fat is burned. According to a recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition, curcumin, the pigmented portion of the spice tumeric, may help to reduce body fat and total body weight.

Curcumin Effects on Weight Loss " The Study

In this study, mice were fed a high fat diet for twelve weeks while being supplemented with curcumin. The researchers were surprised to find that although the mice ate the same amount of food while on the curcumin supplement, they lost both weight and body fat. It was also observed that levels of a growth factor known as vascular endothelial growth factor needed for the growth of fat tissue was decreased by the curcumin supplementation. As an aside, the mice were noted to have a decrease in their cholesterol levels at the end of the twelve week period. At least according to this study, curcumin for weight loss appears to have potential, although these curcumin effects need to be confirmed in humans.

Curcumin Effects " Other Benefits?

While this is one of the first studies to look at curcumin for weight loss, this yellow pigment has shown health benefits in other studies. Previous research has demonstrated that curcumin has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. In animal studies, its been shown to decrease cholesterol levels and may help to protect the liver from damage due to toxins. Its also been shown to have anti-cancer potential and the ability to offset some of the brain and memory changes associated with Alzheimers in animals.

Why Is Curcumin Effective for Weight Loss?

Its unclear what accounted for curcumins effect on weight loss in this study. Its thought that it may interfere with one of the enzymes needed for building fat tissue. Some studies have also shown that curcumin lowers insulin resistance, thereby decreasing the risk of type 2 diabetes. The ability to lower insulin resistance may also partially account for its ability to promote fat loss.

The Bottom Line

Should you use curcumin for weight loss? Because this study was conducted in mice, its difficult to extrapolate this data to humans. Although the data is too preliminary to recommend taking curcumin supplements, you can get some of the many health benefits of curcumin by adding the spice tumeric to your diet. Tumeric is often used in Indian recipes and is one of the flavorful spices found in curry. Although a healthy diet and exercise are the best way to reduce weight, adding a little tumeric to your diet may give you some additional health benefits, and, hopefully, make it a little easier to shed those excess pounds.

Are BPA Free Baby Bottles Really Free of BPA?

No one is more susceptible to the effects of toxins than a baby. With their rapidly dividing cells, exposure to the toxins found in air, food and water can more easily result in DNA damage that could lead to a cancer later in life. This is why there is so much concern about bisphenol A, or BPA, in baby bottles. BPA is a chemical used in the manufacture of plastics and resins and is commonly used to make baby bottles. Theres been concern that BPA could leech into liquids placed in the bottles, particularly when theyre heated. This was subsequently confirmed by studies. Some manufacturers have responded by developing BPA free baby bottles and other baby items. Unfortunately, as a recent study shows, these bottles may not live up to their claim.

A recent study conducted by researchers at Health Canada found small amounts of BPA in a series of nine different brands of baby bottles which were advertised as being free of BPA. Although the amounts found were "trace", its still created concern among consumers. Health Canada quickly responded by attributing the BPA in the BPA free baby bottles to cross-contamination during manufacturing and emphasized that these small amounts should post no health concern. The spokesperson for one company that manufactures one of the problematic BPA free baby bottles, stated that independent testing had shown his product to be completely free of BPA.

It may not be clear whether BPA free baby bottles are actually free of BPA, although it does appear that amounts are significantly lower than those found in conventional plastic baby bottles that arent advertised as BPA free; but is it enough? Even trace amounts of BPA in a baby bottle could be a problem when the bottle is heated which makes it easier for the BPA to leach into the liquid.

There seems little doubt that BPA exposure is a problem, particularly for babies. In animals studies, BPA has been show to exert negative effects on health even at low doses. Theres concern that this chemical could have hormone-like effects in infants and children and could affect brain development. BPA has been shown to have estrogen-like activity in animals which could increase a babys risk of breast cancer later in life.

Is it really safe to buy BPA free baby bottles and other baby items? Its difficult to say on the basis of a single study. One way to avoid the problem is to use glass baby bottles and powdered formula rather than formula in cans. Most cans are lined with a resin that contains BPA. It can be a challenge to find glass baby bottles, but at least youll have the reassurance of knowing theyre completely free of BPA.
